02/20/12 ~ Support working lands bill. The League of Women Voters of Vermont supports the Working Lands Enterprise Investment Bill (H.496/S.246).
The League recognizes that some land-use decisions are of statewide concern and believes that the state has an overriding interest and responsibility for the protection of renewable resource lands, such as farmland, where development could result in the loss of productivity. Land development of more than local benefit not provided by the private sector is also of more than local concern.
The Working Lands bill would strengthen Vermont’s working landscape by providing technical and financial support to agriculture, forestry and value-added business sectors that are linked to these enterprises.
Vermonters overwhelmingly identify the working landscape as one of the aspects of Vermont that they value most. This bill will provide an important support to Vermont’s burgeoning small farm and value-added entrepreneurs. Ask your legislators to support funding of this important economic development program.
